Substation I Program 2018




NEPPA’s Substation I Program is a four-week program designed to introduce participants to the systems and components of a Substation, including basic mathematics.

Tuesday – Friday, February 6 - 9, 2018        8:00 am – 2:00 pm

Tuesday – Friday, April 10 - 13, 2018          8:00 am – 2:00 pm

Tuesday – Friday, May 15 - 18, 2018           8:00 am – 2:00 pm

Tuesday – Friday, June 12 - 15, 2018          8:00 am – 2:00 pm

Students will Learn


  • Hazards inside substations
  • The difference between AC Power and DC Power
  • Using mathematics as a tool for solving problems and calculating various electrical quantities
  • Importance of cells and batteries in a substation
  • How relays operate and their function
  • Basic checks and tests that need to be performed in a substation
  • The role and safe operation of circuit reclosers, circuit breakers, and voltage regulators
  • Inspections of substations


Course Prerequisites


No prerequisite required, but a basic knowledge of mathematics is beneficial.

Non-Members: $3,675

Steve Socoby, Director of Training & Education

Steve has 36 years of hands on experience in all facets of operations, of public power utilities including: Line Superintendent; supervision of crews, maintenance, new construction, reliability and associated plant & sub-station responsibilities. He is a recognized expert in safety and OSHA compliance.


In his role of Director of Training, he is responsible for development and quality of safety & technical programs. He also oversees the line-workers’ school and teaches utility management and supervision, electronic controls and power-line operation programs.


Recognized as an industry leader and expert Steve has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Northeast Public Power Association and been recognized by the Maine State Legislature for his previous 30 Years of Distinguished Service. Steve attended the University of Maine at Orono.
