ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Workers in street and highway work zones are exposed to risk of injury from the movement of construction vehicles and equipment within work zones, as well as from passing motor vehicle traffic. Data from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) indicate that of the 841 work-related fatalities in the U.S. highway construction industry between 1992 and 1998, 465 (55%) were vehicle or equipment –related incidents that occurred in a work zone. According to the Federal Highway Administration, work zone fatalities have increased approximately 50 % since 1998.
This program will provide an overview of how public employees work in various roadway work zone locations, and overall personal protection procedures. Attendees will learn the importance of work zone safety training through the analysis of national and state injury/fatality data for work zones, confined spaces, construction sites and the OSHA “Focus Four:” Falls, Electrical Contact, Struck by, and Caught in between. Attendees will learn how to develop formal traffic control plans for work zones, and will review the types of personal protective equipment required for working safely in work zones, along with specifications for high-visibility clothing, hearing protection, hardhats, etc

Utility managers, superintendents, foremen, lineworkers, and other staff responsible for planning and performing work in public roadways. While the program is based on Massachusetts regulations and guidelines, utility workers from other states are invited to participate and learn the fundamentals of work zone safety. In addition to municipal electric utility employees, police officers and public works officials are also invited to participate.
